School Supplies = Journalism?

I wonder what goes through the heads of those who are in charge of choosing what to write on. And then my thoughts wander off to those who actually do the writing. Or maybe it’s a PR person that’s to blame for pitching something so unbelievably useless. Take this article from the Kuwait Times for example.
Apparently, there are a lot of unhappy parents out there who are pissed off at the fact that places like Shanakil are jacking up the prices of erasers. Hey, that’s fair – in times like these it’s important to be as economical as possible (no sarcasm, really).
But do we really have to endure this?:
“The price [of stationary] is triple what we used to pay a few years ago,” said Um Khalid, a mother of two older children. “What’s worse is that the quality of the products is very bad. The eraser for instance breaks after the first or second use…” (Kuwait Times, September 4, 2011)
Really? I understand that this fell under the local section, but honestly? Is this news? Maybe if it was written from a different angle …
It’s still awkward.
